Paragliders

It turns out that this week was the Canadian Paragliding championships. Some of these pilots have flown all the way to the US border (a 200 mile trip)!

I was going to take a tandem ride on one of these, but my legs haven't been strong enough to run for the takeoff. But this is a ride that I will be taking; hopefully next visit before winter.

The Jewel of the Rockies

OK! I finally made my way to an internet cafe to catch up on my electronic world. There is no such thing as free internet around here either! I haven't minded being without the electronic tethers of life, but I have missed my posting. I will share this photo of Lake Louise - it's the epitome of the Canadian Rockies (Alberta) - this is about an hour away from our home. I shot this in late day - overcast sky and way too much late-day haze and harsh light. I went monochromatic with it, since the amazing vivid colors were not showing themselves at this time. No matter in which light you look at Lake Louise, it is still the most beautiful sight to see. As with everything in BC, and the Canadian Rockies, there is beauty around every turn, and the beauty is almost too much to take sometimes.

Kicking Horse Gondola

Backyard Wildlife

So nice to see the deer come close to the house. Also saw a black bear in the back yard, but didn't get a good shot of him. He was gone before I got my lens set up. I love that they visit and pass through. After all, it is their land.

Blue Valve

I'm leaving the Pacific Northwest for a little while and heading to the Canadian Rocky Mountains (British Columbia). Tomorrow will be in the car all day, and internet access for the next few weeks will be scarce. I will drive into town every now and again to get my fix, and try to keep my posts current. Hug Point

I made it to this cove and back just before the tide rose. Wouldn't be the worse thing in the world to be trapped here. Another foggy day at the coast. Sunshine, clouds, fog, rain - the Oregon coast is an extraordinary place. It's where the mountains and forest touch the ocean. It can't be explained, or understood. I sat on this beach for a long time today.

Indian Beach

The fog lifted in the afternoon yesterday, and gave way to some fantastic views. This is another popular surfing spot - Indian Beach. And if you've ever seen the movie "The Goonies," the final scenes are shot on this beach. Off in the background is Tillamook Head - I've hiked up and over the headland (not on this day, but last year). This shot is taken from the lookout point at Ecola State Park, OR.

The second view is looking south toward Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock (in the distance) surrounded by clouds and fog.

Surf's Up!

A popular surfing spot - Smuggler's Cove in Oswald West State Park, OR. Most views were covered by fog this morning.

The ISO speed was an accident, in case you were wondering. I was previously shooting in the forest and had to bump it up. I knew I would forget to change it back!!

Hungry Birds

These blue birds are not shy about coming close for a handout. They love walnuts, and every time I open my back door, they come flying down from the tree and wait for a walnut. If I feed the squirrels the walnuts, these birds will confront the squirrels for the treats! It's fun to watch...

I am off to the coast for a few days. Not sure if I will have internet access, so I may not be able to post over the next few days. I will be taking lots of photos! The temps will be much milder at the beach too!

A REAL 5 Volcano Day

Not only did I see all five, but I shot all five - all from Sherrard Point, at the top of Larch Mountain, OR. Want to see all five? I'll just bore you with these two... Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens. I couldn't resist stepping off the path, as I do sometimes. Not sure what it is when I get a camera in my hand, but I'm always in search of the right shot. Stepping off the path proved to be a really bad idea, as I ended up on a very loose-rock steep cliff. Let's just say I almost sacrificed myself to the five volcanoes, and never got the shot. On my way out, on the path I saw two men with tripods, fancy cameras and lenses. I exchanged a few words with them, and the one man said "it's more fun taking the photos than it is looking at them." I couldn't have agreed more, and just wandered down the path giggling to myself.

Ain't no Bull

He's got some horns... wouldn't want to get in his way! I'm still trying to get used to the zoom lens. The thing I like about it, is that I can be driving through the country (as in this case), and just stop when I see something off in the distance, zoom in, and shoot. Of course this has to take place rather quickly so that I don't hold up traffic, or cause an accident! In this shot, I didn't get him focused, or for whatever reason, he's a bit blurred. Even though the lens has image stabilization, it is pretty tricky to handle and hold steady. A tripod would be the best way to handle this lens, is what I'm finding out. But I've been having fun experimenting with hand held!

Mini Castle

I don't really have a story for this, other than I have passed by it so many times and have wondered what this miniature castle is doing next to the railroad tracks. As it turns out, I got a closer look today - there are more than this one miniature - there was another one, on what appears to be a multi-million dollar estate on the other side of the railroad tracks. The property was for sale. Wonder if the miniatures are included?

Vista House

View of vista house from the Portland Women's Forum lookout. It finally stopped raining, so I took a ride down the gorge. Seems everyone else had the same idea. I shot this same scene almost 7 months ago. I couldn't resist trying it again with the new lens in a different season. Standing there takes your breath away no matter which season!

It's Not all Roses

Been back only a few days and I'm already slacking on my postings! It's been raining here for the past two days - imagine that... rain in the Northwest... Haven't really wanted to bring the camera equipment out in the rain. It seems to have stopped for the time being, and they are promising sunshine for a while!

My neighbor Sheila was kind enough to let me photograph her beautiful flowers and roses in her yard. She really has a green thumb when it comes to her flowers, and her yard is an endless garden of blossoms and vibrant colors!
