The Railroad Bridge

Stretching over the Maumee River in Grand Rapids, Ohio, this railroad truss bridge isn't being used. It was fun to explore. Highly illegal, but fun!

The Wheel

In the timeless words of Jerry Garcia,"Every time that wheel turns 'round, you're bound to cover just a little more ground." Not sure this wheel does much turnin' anymore, but thought it made a nice subject for today.

Holly and I were driving back from the park and saw a house for sale - she wanted a closer look and we had to drive down a very long, narrow driveway to see it. The property and house were beautiful - it had a barn and this wagon... it even had its own pond on 6 acres. We felt like we were intruding as it was quite a private property. As we were driving out, the owner was pulling in... Ooops! Busted! He seemed OK with the fact that we drove in there to get a closer look. Think he's anxious to sell! I told Holly she could grow lots of chickens here if she bought this property! Come on, Holly... buy this house!

Vibrant Hydrant

Wild Goose Chase

Big cheat, big crop. I forgot my post yesterday, so here's a recent one to look at. These geese are territorial and they get angry at each other, especially when one gets fed a little treat, and the other does not. They chase and hiss at each other and try to keep them away from the food source!

Duck Crossing

The water was a little high at Wildwood - this was shot a few days ago. This trail was closed, but I had to have a closer look, so I went walking through the flooded plain anyway. (scroll two posts down)..

I did spend most of the day at Wildwood today (again)... I didn't bring my camera. I also forgot my walking shoes! My friend Monica picked me up to go walking, and didn't realize that I left my walking shoes at home until we arrived at the park. I ended up walking several miles in my pali-Hawaii sandals. Not exactly practical walking shoes, but another nice day in the park, I would have gone barefoot.

The Iron Tree

The tree of life sculpture at the Toledo Botanical Garden - one of my favorite sculptures in the garden. It's three dimensional - almost like a puzzle piece. As you approach the sculpture, the tree changes shape and form as you perceive the two structures from different directions and distances. As with the tree of life, and how you perceive its meaning. To me, the tree of life represents unity.

Trees under water

It didn't seem like it rained that much this week, but there are a lot of flooded areas. Another day at Wildwood, the water is beginning to recede, but still lots of water. Today I rode a bike to Wildwood. I'm exhausted, but it sure felt good to get out in the nice weather and do something fun.

Weekend Reflection at the Manor House

Another day at Wildwood. The flood plain was flooded - I stayed on the higher ground and explored the manor house. Since it's the weekend, I was especially looking for reflections for the Weekend Reflection meme. I couldn't hope to find a reflection on the flood plain - the water was like chocolate milk!

Street Buggy

I was walking from the park with my friend Diane and this dune buggy came speeding up the dirt road. I saw him coming and decided that I wanted to practice my motion blur shots. Unfortunately I was using my 50mm, and couldn't get the camera set to the ideal settings before he came speeding by. But I panned and shot a few consecutive, and for a last minute action shot, I managed to capture a little motion blur. Something I need to practice more. Looks like fun, doesn't it!?

Antique Plow

I'm cheating today - the weather went south on us, and it rained all day. I didn't get out; but hey, I had a pretty good track record so far this week! I took this shot a few days ago at a greenhouse in town. It was a rainy day, just like today.

I got in close to these rusty metal things on this old plow. I liked the repetition of the objects, and the texture.

Covered Bridge at Wildwood

Another warm and sunny day - met my friend Holly at Wildwood and walked a few miles wearing not-so-comfy shoes. Either way, my energy level has been up, so I will take my miles whenever and however I get them! We saw many deer today too!

I have photographed this bridge before, this time tried a different angle, using the 50mm and went for a shallow DoF for a different effect.

Getting into the swing

What is it about swings on a playground that instantly takes you back to childhood? I can't seem to resist the swing whenever I see one. I don't think it can ever stop being fun - swinging as high as you can, wind in your hair, and feeling carefree - like a kid again!

Easter in the Swamp

Took a little walk through Irwin Prairie wetland preserve. The sound of frogs echoed through the wetlands. Look at the size of the mushroom growing on this tree!

The Greenhouse

Shopping for herbs today, but came to discover that most herbs aren't quite ready just yet. Been hard to resist the nice summer-like weather, I sometimes forget it's only April!

I liked the converging lines of this composition. I've always loved greenhouses for their long rows of plants that seem to go on forever!

More Path, More Shadows

Another milestone reached today; although it came with a mixed bag of news from the doctor who informed me that I still have to be treated with radiation for at least another two months. He tells me I've responded well to the treatments, but there's still need to aggressively attack other areas. Although the treatments will not be as invasive and painful as the past two months, I had hoped for some relief from the daily treatments that keep me tethered to the hospital.

I am heartbroken as this means that I can't go back to my home any time soon. I was so looking forward to going home - at least for a visit. I guess I have to wait a while longer. Until then, I will just wander this path and pray that it's not all for naught.

Standing Tall

The weather is getting nice - it was warm sun today, and I was happy to be outside among the birch trees. Even more than February, I am happy to see March come to an end. It was a long and difficult month for me, but I will reach another milestone as of tomorrow. Each time I reach a small milestone, I am reminded of my strength.

Old Church Steeple

Driving through the country today saw some old charming churches. Thought this would work well in b/w for monochrome weekend.

Some days (like today), I get to feeling like I need to reinforce and keep reminding myself of my faith. I tend to find spirituality in lots of different things, but somehow I always feel the sense that He is near when I am at a church - with steeple reaching into the sky - I have to know that He is always beside me.

More little purple flowers

A continuation of yesterday's crocus theme... My mother-in-law told me a humorous story today about planting these little flowers. I had no idea the amount of work and trickery must go into planting these little guys - especially when you have to out-smart hungry squirrels who like to eat the bulbs! I guess now I will know what these little flowers must endure in order to survive - for them to be strong enough to pop through the winter snow when it is there time to bloom and thrive. For small delicate flowers, they are quite the little fighters!

Spring Cliches...

Or are they crocuses? :) I did step out the front door today and found these little flowers coming up. They were in a tight spot, so I took some chances and put the camera body down to its level - rather than looking through the viewfinder, I let the autofocus do its thing and hoped for the best. Needless to say, some happened, and some didn't. It was like AF Russian Roulette. I think I got some interesting angles with unpredictable depths of field.

More from the Botanical Garden

A bit of a cheat - taken yesterday. Susan, Toledonative, wanted to see my swan. Here he is! Wondering why his neck is dirty? See the picture below :)

The wildlife at the garden were hungry, and certainly not being shy about trying to find food any way they could. I brought some bread for them - for the ducks, geese, and even the squirrels were not shy nor picky about whatever morsels were thrown their way!

First Day of Spring

Not as warm as the past few days, but I did manage to get out with a friend to one of my favorite places to shoot, the Toledo Botanical Garden. Apparently I missed my fellow blogger and friend, Toledonative at the garden, and it seems we had about the same photographic eye today. Since she posted before me, I posted something she did not to keep a variety! I think I've been to TBG at least three times this week. Oh well, it's close to home and lots of wildlife and beauty!

Blue Sky Window Reflection

Today was day one of a new round of radiation treatments. It was seriously painful and uncomfortable. I managed to whimper my way through it. One down, five more to go... {sigh}. I am determined to take it like a champ. My eye is on the prize!

St. Patrick's Day

Tonight we tried to avoid the St. Pat's festivities and go sit down for a dinner that didn't consist of potatoes and corned beef... ucck. Not feeling my best, I didn't want to be around the crowds of people dressed in green drinking green beer with their annual St. Pat's day jackass license. So Italian it is! I've never been here before, and I was pleasantly surprised! I admit, I do miss the days of green beer and bag pipes; but maybe next year when I'm feeling more festive for the wearin' of the green, I'll be tipping a few Guinness!

What's good for the goose...

My socks are off, toes are out. What a day today! Sunny and warm, it WAS spring! So great to be outdoors for a change!

I met my friend Jennifer for lunch today - haven't seen her in a long time. It's always nice to reconnect with friends! On my way home, Monica called and we met at the Toledo Botanical Garden to enjoy the sunshine - where we apparently went on a wild goose chase. They weren't too camera shy today and were more than happy to come close to find out if there were any treats in my pockets.

We later went for ice cream... what a decadent day it was... I had chocolate raspberry truffle without an ounce of guilt!

Another rainy day on Erie

Ah, I am very happy for the spring-forward today. Longer days, I can tell that spring is near! I don't mind the rain - it reminds me of the NW. I love waking to the sound and the smell of rain with the window opened.

The boatyard

It poured down rain and the wind blew all day. A gray day, but it gives a certain mystery to places like the boatyard. I love the sound of the halyards clanking on the masts.
